Dressing the baby
Optimal temperature conditions are extremely important for a newborn. Often parents mistakenly believe that the baby needs to be wrapped up as tightly as possible so that he does not freeze, but this is completely wrong. The fact is that the crumbs quickly overheat, which in turn is much more dangerous than hypothermia.
So, what should a baby wear depending on the temperature outside:
- From -10 to -6 - a warm flannel blouse, a fabric slip underneath, knitted booties, thin and thick hats, and a winter suit or fur-lined envelope on top. Here it is assumed that at lower temperatures we do not go for a walk.
- From -5 to -1 - we leave everything the same as in the previous paragraph, only we remove the booties and warm blouse.
- From 0 to +4 - slip overalls, a thin cap and a demi-season hat, a winter suit and a scarf.
- From +5 to +9 - replace the warm sleepsuit with a lighter one and do not put on a cap, the rest is the same as in the previous paragraph.
- From +10 to +13 - a warm slip or romper with a blouse, a demi-season outer suit with a thin cap.
- From +14 to + 16 - the same scheme as indicated above, however, the outer overalls may already be made of artificial “plush” fur.
- From +17 to +20 - an insulated slip and a light cap will be enough.
- From +21 and above - a short-sleeved bodysuit with shorts or light pants; in extreme heat, remove the lower part. Be sure to cover your head with a Panama hat or scarf.
In cold weather, if you are an inexperienced parent and do not know how to dress your baby, follow this rule: put the same thing on your baby as you put on yourself, but add one more extra layer.

What to consider when dressing your baby
To determine how to properly dress a child for a walk, you need to take into account weather conditions:

- air temperature;
- humidity;
- presence of precipitation;
- presence and strength of wind;
- presence of sun.
It is also worth considering that during this period of the year the weather is still very unstable and as soon as the sun hides behind the clouds, it will become much colder. It is better to refrain from walking if it is raining outside or gusty winds are blowing. Although with modern strollers today any weather is not scary, as they reliably protect the baby from adverse weather conditions.
- At air temperatures of +2 - +8 degrees, you can use a cotton slip, fleece slip, envelope or overalls with padding polyester insulation. You can put a cotton cap and a not too thick hat, for example, terry, on the baby’s head.
- If the thermometer has risen to +8 - +13 degrees, parents can limit themselves to a cotton sleepsuit and put on a jumpsuit with thin insulation on top of it. It will be enough to put a thin cap on the child’s head.
- At an air temperature of +13 - +17 degrees, thin cotton overalls and velor overalls (with insulation), as well as a thin hat for the head, can be used as clothing for the baby.
What spring clothes are best to choose?
In the spring, in order to dress your child correctly for a walk, you need to have both thin and warmer (thick or insulated with lining) things in your wardrobe. In this case, special attention should be paid to wardrobe items that will be in direct contact with the delicate and easily wounded skin of children, i.e. those that will serve as the first layer.

6-12 months
From this age, the child begins to sit in a stroller and actively take an interest in the world around him. Therefore, the walking wardrobe is also changing:
- From -10 to 6 - warm overalls with booties, a jacket and a winter suit, with a hat and cap on top.
- From -5 to -1 - we leave everything the same, remove the booties and jacket.
- From 0 to +4 - you can also repeat the previous set of clothes, replacing the hat with a lightweight one.
- From +5 to +9 - instead of a warm slip, we put on a lighter one, leave a winter suit and a hat with a scarf.
- From +10 to +13 - at this temperature mark we put on demi-season outerwear, but return the warm slip underneath. Of course, we leave the hat and scarf.
- From +14 to + 16 - a light sleepsuit and a “plush” jumpsuit with a light headdress.
- From +17 to +20 - jacket/body with pants, Panama hat or sun cap.
- From +21 and above - a light slip with short sleeves, or pants with a T-shirt, a summer dress or a sundress for a girl. In extreme heat, shorts with a T-shirt, but it is better to always have a cardigan with you in case the wind suddenly rises or it starts to rain.
Do newborns even need sleepwear?
Almost every pediatrician will tell you that air baths are of great benefit for the development of the baby. And it is imperative to leave the child without clothes during the day. For example, when you change his diaper. Let him lie naked for 10 minutes, gradually increasing the time.
When the child is without clothes, there should be no drafts in the room!
So a reasonable question arises: wouldn’t it be healthier for a child to sleep without clothes, so that nothing bothers him or puts pressure on him?
The fact is that the newborn’s body cannot yet regulate heat exchange, and the baby can freeze already at a temperature of 21 degrees. Therefore, be sure to wear at least a thin “man” at night. If the room is very hot and you can’t turn on the air conditioning, then you should dress your baby in a thin bodysuit with short sleeves and no legs.
Do you need socks? Children's socks are as necessary a sleep attribute as pajamas, especially for older children. But a newborn does not need socks if you use a “little man” with legs.
What about the beanie? Should a newborn wear a hat at night? If you bathe your child before bed, then the presence of a hat is not even discussed - it is required! But if the child’s neck is wet at night, then it’s time to take off the cap - the little one is hot! The exception is the summer heat - if the room is stuffy, then the hat will cause the child even more discomfort.
To cover or not?
Do you think that if you cover your little one with a blanket, he will sleep like that all night? No - babies toss and turn a lot at night, and in the morning you will find a blanket somewhere on the floor. Therefore, light pajamas and socks are the necessary things for a night's rest.
Instead of a blanket, a sleeping bag will be more comfortable for both you and your baby. By the way, this item is not only more convenient, but also safer - the child will not cover his head with it, he will not fall out of the crib in it, and at the same time the baby will be warm.
We dress a child from 1 to 3 years old
The baby already knows how to sit and stand firmly, and also takes its first steps. It is becoming increasingly difficult for a baby to sit in a stroller, so you should dress him like this:
- From -10 to -6 - a warm blouse or bodysuit with long sleeves, a turtleneck or sweater (preferably fleece), tights and warm socks, on top of a winter suit (pants + jacket, or one-piece suit). We put boots or dutik boots on our feet and a hat on our heads.
- From -5 to -1 - everything is the same as above, but you can do without warm socks and a jacket.
- From 0 to +4 - we leave the same clothes, but take lighter tights, instead of two winter sweaters we leave one.
- From +5 to +9 - a thin blouse with long sleeves and tights, one-piece outer overalls or pants with a jacket.
- From +10 to +13 - here we replace the bologna pants with lighter trousers with fleece, but leave a warm jacket. We put on demi-season boots on our feet and a lightweight hat on our head.
- From +14 to + 16 - wear jeans/trousers with a sweatshirt and windbreaker, a light hat on your head, sneakers are suitable as shoes.
- From +17 to +20 - a girl can wear a dress with tights, or a blouse with a skirt or pants without insulation. A light shirt and jeans or sports pants are suitable for a boy. On your feet are light mesh sneakers or sandals. We cover our heads from the sun.
- From +21 and above - the choice here is huge: sundresses and skirts for girls, shorts for boys. A variety of T-shirts and T-shirts will fit on top. As a headdress - a Panama hat, a scarf or scarf, a cap.
Of course, the options we have proposed are purely conditional. You can always replace a one-piece suit with a separate one, wear a denim jacket instead of a windbreaker, and wear a tracksuit instead of trousers or a shirt. You need to focus on the thickness of the fabric and the length of the legs/sleeves.
How to dress a newborn...
I found an article on the Internet, I really liked it because... I have a baby bump in February and I really don’t want to wrap my baby up too much. But unfortunately I have no experience, and I don’t want to rely on the advice of my grandparents, because... They are still trying to wrap my husband up warmer((. For anyone interested in the article, please see below...
Typically, pregnant women do not think about how and how warmly to properly dress their baby. And when the baby is born, she seems so small and defenseless that you want to protect her as much as possible from everything. Many mothers, especially those who have this first child, constantly feel that the baby is cold, and they wrap him in “a hundred” clothes. But this is not at all correct! Why can't you wrap a newborn? If only because it will make him uncomfortable! Newborns’ own thermoregulation system has not yet fully formed, so the baby quickly overheats and quickly cools down. Clothing that is too warm causes overheating and an increase in body temperature, sometimes very significant. I know of a case where a mother had to call an ambulance at night because the baby’s temperature rose to 40C. The reason was that the baby was seriously wrapped up in several warm blankets, and the heating was turned on at night. If a child is hot, he sweats. And then the slightest breeze can “pass through” the baby. Moreover, if the child is constantly wrapped up, then the body begins to perceive the slightest cold snap as a threat, and will not be able to resist this threat. Which will lead to constant colds and reduced immunity in older age. So, do you want your child to be sick every year from autumn to spring? Then wrap yourself up better, starting from birth! Do you want your child to grow up healthy? Dress it for the weather! A little about physiology In full-term newborns, heat production is somewhat faster than heat loss in intensity. However, during the first month of life, thermoregulation processes are somewhat imperfect. This is especially true for premature or low birth weight babies whose birth weight was about 2.5 kg or less. Newborn babies have a rather thin subcutaneous fat layer, which plays one of the main roles in protecting the body from hypothermia. On the other hand, newborn babies do not yet have functioning sweat glands, which are responsible for releasing excess heat through the evaporation of sweat from the surface of the skin. By the month, the thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer increases, thus protecting against hypothermia becomes better. But the processes of heat transfer still remain imperfect: sweat glands begin to actively function only by the age of three years of a child’s life. It is these features of thermoregulation that need to be taken into account when dressing your baby. How to check if a child is comfortable Many people advise touching the nose - if it is warm, then everything is fine. If it’s cold, then the baby is cold. This is not entirely correct - the temperature of the nose will always be a little less or a little more than body temperature. It is better to check the temperature of the crown, neck, upper back, and feet. You can also check the temperature of the crown while walking, simply by sticking your hand under your hat. Check the temperature in other places at home immediately after your walk. If these areas are hot to the touch and wet, your baby is overheating. Draw conclusions about what to wear for your next walk. If they are cold, then the child is frozen. Next time at this temperature, dress your baby warmer. When outside in cold winter weather, pay attention to the color of the skin on your face. If she becomes pale, it means the child is freezing. How to dress your baby at home? Like yourself. At temperatures above 27C, it is enough to wear a thin cotton blouse. At 24C-27C - thin cotton overalls 20C - 24C - thin cotton overalls, socks. At temperatures below 22C - a cap. 17C - 20C - thick cotton overalls, socks, cap. During sleep When sleeping, a newborn baby is dressed in the same way as when he is awake. Only sometimes they additionally cover the baby with a diaper or blanket. At the same time, avoid using thick blankets - woolen or cotton, as there is a high probability of the child overheating under them. It is better to buy special blankets made from modern materials that allow air to pass through. Then, even if the child wraps his head in it, nothing bad will happen. At temperatures above 27C there is no need to cover the child with anything. At 24C-27C, cover the baby with a thin diaper. At 20C - 24C, cover with a thicker diaper. 17C - 20C - use a thin blanket. How to dress a baby outside? Here you can use the formula - “As yourself + one layer.” When walking in the winter with my daughter (she’s just my “winter one”), I dressed her a little warmer than I would have dressed for the weather, and I dressed her a little colder. We walked according to time or, if I was cold, we went home earlier. According to this scheme, not once during the entire winter did my baby become hypothermic or overheated.
Most often in winter I dressed my daughter in a thin cotton overall, wool socks, a cotton cap, a woolen hat-helmet, and a warm winter overall. Then they were placed in a warm fur envelope. If it was relatively warm outside, the ties on the fur envelope loosened and it was mostly used to keep the baby soft in the stroller.
When walking, do not be afraid of a weak and light breeze. But you should be wary of the cold piercing wind. Always make sure that the child is not exposed to air - cover the stroller with anti-wind film, cover the child with yourself from the wind if it is necessary to remove him from the stroller in such conditions.
How to understand that a child is cold
If you notice the following signs, this means your baby is cold:
- Cold nose. At optimal temperature conditions it should be warm. If you have dressed your baby well, but his nose is still cold, then you should reduce the walking time.
- Hiccups occur because children's heads get cold first; perhaps the hat is too light.
- Icy hands and feet - there’s nothing to add here, they always freeze first.
If your baby is cold, he will start tossing and turning and crying, and he will most likely have difficulty falling asleep. Always take a warm fleece blanket for a walk - it is quite weightless and folds up compactly for a bag. It can come in handy at any moment, of course, if we are not talking about +30 degrees.
Some practical tips
In order to properly equip your baby for a walk in the spring, make staying in the fresh air as pleasant and useful as possible, and also give yourself pleasure from the pastime, you need to adhere to simple, but very important rules:
- a child should not be overly wrapped up, thinking that he is completely defenseless and very vulnerable;
- observe time limits for walking (optimally 1.5 - 2 hours);
- always have a warm blanket or extra overalls in stock;
- The baby’s head must be covered with a cap, regardless of the air temperature;
- in clothing it is best to follow the principle of multi-layering;
- trust your own feelings and focus on weather conditions.
Thus, you can turn a spring walk into one of the activities to harden your baby and strengthen his immunity.

Mom plays classics! – 5 outfits from life “with a child”
Almost every day I started with leggings and a sweatshirt - that’s what I wore when I ran for a walk with Baby. Depending on my mood, I either remained an athlete mom, passing off my look as the “sports are back in fashion” trend, or I dressed up as myself – that is, a girl accustomed to wearing dresses and shoes. This was a little more difficult. Mothers with small children chose clothes that allowed them to actively run, climb slides, bend over, and wash purees from them unnoticed - so that they didn’t have to think about them! This meant that everything except jeans was in question. By shaking up my wardrobe again, I removed the taboos from many things and reconsidered my own views on what a mother can look like.
On me: jeans, Mother - the straight fit, unlike the tapered one, did not make me look fat. The Finders Keepers top was a great summer interpretation of a men's shirt, elegant and feminine at the same time and didn't get in the way of my life.
1. The first thing that fell from the hangers straight into my hands, like a gift from heaven, was a little black dress - it was non-staining, and the fabric was dense and smooth - it was impossible to get dirty in it, which means the Kid could drool over me as much as he wanted! Pairing it with Ivanka Trump pumps gave me a classic and timeless outfit. The spots did not threaten the already spotted leopard ballet shoes. And the straw bag, Henry Bendel and Dior glasses added what I have always strived for in Miami - the feeling that I am living in eternal summer. It turned out to be quite practical for a walk in the city, but not for a playground!

2. I spied a houndstooth dress made of thin silk from Malysh’s friend. Her mother, Vika Zamchevskaya, was the designer of the children's clothing brand LittleMiniMe and came up with this model for girls in the form of a bodysuit. But I passionately wanted the same! I thought since it’s convenient for a one and a half year old girl to lead an active life in it, then it would suit me too! I had to stun the author with a request to sew the same one for me to order, but without the buttons between the legs. Finding a houndstooth dress was easy in wool, but absolutely impossible in chiffon or silk. So we had to take a detour. For anyone who likes such madness, contact the designer here. And a photo of my muse is here:

3. Following the dresses, I rehabilitated the light bottom and started wearing white jeans everywhere. They got dirty, but not immediately and they didn’t have to be taken to the dry cleaner. The washing machine was spinning in the house, like me, every day. Paired with white jeans, everything I wore, be it shirts, tops or sweatshirts, looked much brighter and more interesting than with regular blue ones.

4. Combinations of light shades of cream, soft pink, milky white have always been a win-win option if I needed to look fresh and a little more elegant than usual. Silk added a little chic to everyday life - but it was also a weak link. So I determined this set to be great for walking with a stroller, but impractical for active play.
I'm wearing: jeans, Mother; vintage top found at a consigment store in Palm Beach, Chanel; ballet shoes, Me Too
5. I was afraid to wear a pleated skirt with children for two reasons: the habit of adding heels to it and the fear of destroying it forever. But everything turned out better than I thought. When I went for a walk with Baby in it, I felt great in the skirt + sneakers tandem. Having survived lunch in it, I got two mashed potatoes stains on the hem, and I washed them at home, but the folds did not lose their shape and there were no marks left.
I'm wearing: skirt, 3.1 Phillip Lim; top, Giambattista Valli; glasses, Karen Walker, sneakers, Nike; backpack, Rag&Bone
It turned out that you shouldn’t store beauty in the closet! And my every day with the children could sparkle, come to life and shine in the eyes of a confident and satisfied mother. It was not necessary to adapt to the realities of motherhood; it was necessary to practice a little in order to fit fragile and capricious fashion into an active life. But mothers know how to cope with the whims!
How long does it take to walk with a newborn?
The autumn period is specific, so parents need to be careful and pay due attention. The first walk should take place no earlier than 3-5 days after discharge.
If it’s cool outside, it’s better to walk around the park with your baby in your arms for 15-20 minutes, or breathe some air in the yard on a bench. When it is calm and warm outside, it is better to walk for about half an hour.
For a period of two weeks, the walk will be 4 hours a day.
