how to make a sling from a sheet

Making a sling scarf with your own hands

Would you like to make such a miracle with your own hands? This is not difficult to do and as a result you will get an exclusive option, the color, shape and fabric of which you personally chose!

Before we start handicrafts, let's find out what types of slings exist? Which ones can we make at home, and which ones shouldn’t be attempted?

There are 4 main types:

Ring sling. Its prototype is an ordinary shawl or scarf. This method of carrying a child has long been practiced in many countries, for example, Africa, India, Thailand, Cambodia, and it still remains very popular. The design is very simple: a piece of fabric approximately 2 meters long and 60–70 cm wide, and rings are sewn on one end. The length is adjusted using the free edge of the fabric. This model has many obvious advantages: maneuverability, mobility, you can quickly get the child in and out, suitable for almost any age of the baby .

Standard sling scarf. This is a long canvas, most often from 3 to 5 meters in length and 45–70 in width. The length is selected individually, depending on your build, height and how you will carry the child.

On a note!

The universal size of the sling is 4.2–4.7, short – 2.7-3.7 m.

I would like to note that this type is the most popular and universal. It can also be worn from birth. There are also a lot of ways to wear it: there are options for wearing it on one shoulder, and there are options for wearing it on two. With the second option, there is a comfortable distribution of weight, and, therefore, the load on the mother’s spine is much less.

May-sling. This species is native to China. There is a wide variety of them, but in terms of content it is a rectangle with 4 straps, modified in one way or another. It is quite easy to learn how to use such carriers, but you need to keep in mind that the material is not as flexible as fabric and sometimes it does not adapt well to the child’s structure.

Sling backpack. This is also a rectangle, like the May Sling, the only difference is that it has a rigid belt that transfers the entire load from the back to the hips. This brings physical discomfort to many girls, which is why this type is not so popular.

The first two options are fabric, and these are the ones you can make at home. Let's start with the simplest thing.

DIY scarf sling without sewing

This is the easiest way and does not require any effort.

Perhaps you have a matching stole, scarf or shawl at home - and you just never thought that it could be used in this way. If not, then you can find a fabric that is suitable in size and structure, then you do not need to sew, just overcast the edges. The only caveat is that the fabric should be quite long and of suitable quality.

Then you just need to tie the scarf around yourself in such a way that it is comfortable to carry the child.

If you want to become a modern mother who practically never parts with her baby, but at the same time leads an active life, then you need a baby sling with which you will carry your baby at your breast. In this article you can learn how to sew a ring sling with your own hands.

A sling with rings is usually needed in the first months of a baby’s life, as it allows him to be carried in a lying position, like in a mother’s arms. You can also carry a child in a sitting position, but there are other types of slings for this position (scarf sling, May sling, etc.). Carrying bags in stores are not cheap, and therefore, if you make a sling with rings with your own hands, it will take much less money and very little time.

What you will need

To sew the simplest ring sling, which even novice craftswomen can sew, you will need a piece of fabric 140-150 cm wide (standard width sold in stores) and 192-200-208-220 cm long (for sizes 42-44.46 -48, -50-52 and 54-56 respectively). The fabric should not stretch much, and only in width, but not in length. Dense fabrics such as heavy cotton, linen, jeans, and corduroy are suitable.

You will also need two rings with a diameter of at least 7 cm. The diameter of the rings depends on the density of the fabric - if the fabric is very dense (for example, denim or camouflage fabric), then the rings are needed a little larger - up to 9 cm in diameter. It is preferable to use metal rings, but thick plastic rings will also work.

Sewing a sling

Fold the fabric right side inward, sew along the length and one transverse end, and then turn it inside out. The result will be a double piece of fabric 60-70 cm wide (depending on the age of your baby). We first thread one end of the cut into both rings at once, then sew this end to the main panel at a distance of at least 15-18 cm from the rings, and preferably with more than one line. For convenience, when threading the end of the sling through the rings, you should cross the fabric at their level, and only then bend and stitch the material.

In addition, as an option, for ease of sewing, you can put folds on the end that is threaded through the rings and sew the end in this state.

When the fastener for the sling is ready, after processing the second transverse end of the fabric, the product can be used for its intended purpose.

How to use the sling

Now you have sewn your own ring sling, it’s time to put it on yourself and adjust the length of the product to suit your baby. To do this, you need to thread the free end of the sling through two rings and then return it back through one ring and tighten it tightly. The result is a carrier that can be thrown over the shoulder (with the rings being below the shoulder), and the baby will be placed in a kind of fabric cradle formed in front, who will now always be close to his energetic mother.

How to sew a sling scarf: selecting materials and tools

Which material is best for a sling?

The choice of fabric must be taken seriously. It is important that it is 100% natural material, elastic, and definitely durable.

For the warm season, it is better to choose something made of cotton, viscose or linen. Silk and satin are not the best choice, as the fabric will constantly slide. For winter, it is better to use warmer materials: fleece or wool (check that it is not itchy).

Important! Remember, a sling is the same as clothing, do not let the baby overheat.

The width of elastic fabric is usually 50-55 cm, for heavier fabric - 70-75 cm (fold 3 cm).

Then choose a shape: rectangle, diamond or oval.

We recommend!

It is advisable if the material is solid so that the seams do not interfere with the child

The edges can be overlocked or folded and stitched.

How to make a sling with scarf rings

Now let's start making a more complex version.

  1. Prepare fabric 80 by 220 cm.
  2. Finish all sides with an overlocker or hem.
  3. Next, take 2 rings. The optimal diameter is 60–70 mm, any less and the fabric will not pass through well, and rings that are too large will not provide proper grip.
  4. We pass one edge of the fabric through them and secure it with several lines.

IMPORTANT! Be sure to check how reliable and strong your seams are.

DIY sling scarf for a newborn

For newborns, you can use even more flexible fabric, because the baby’s weight is very small, and the fabric will not sag.

Recommendation!

Stretch is a good choice as the basis of a sling for newborns.

Everything is simple here. We need: a rectangular piece of fabric 60–75 cm wide, 400 to 600 cm long. We give a finished look along the edges using an overlocker or a folded seam. And our product is ready!

Ring slings are very popular among young mothers. This sling allows you to carry a child from birth to 2 years and even more. Today I want to share with you instructions on how to sew your own sling with rings.

TEXTILE

For a sling with rings, in my opinion, the easiest way is to choose a fabric; it should not stretch along the length and width, but should stretch diagonally. It can be cotton, linen, hemp, viscose, natural silk, bamboo, wool. Depending on the time of year, you can choose the quality of the fabric and its density. Choose a fabric that is double-sided or has an attractive appearance on the reverse side. I took single-sided viscose fabric (thin), but I will sew a double-sided sling.

RINGS

It is recommended to purchase rings with a diameter (inside) from 6 cm to 8 cm. The diameter depends on the thickness of the fabric. Natural silk, viscose, sliding fabrics are better worn with rings of smaller diameter. The rings must not have joints. I bought rings at a sewing accessories store - rings intended for bags or backpacks. My rings are solid cast.

SO WE NEED

  • fabric width 60 - 80 cm length 1.80 m - 2.40 m. I.e. From a 1.50 wide piece you can sew two ring slings. The length of the sling depends on your size, chest volume and the age of the baby. In my case, I took 2.20 m of fabric, the golden mean.
  • Rings 2 pcs (internal diameter 60-70 mm)
  • Threads
  • Pins
  • Scissors. By the way, today you can buy a zipper at a bargain price.
  • Needles, it is necessary to have needles of several sizes, since when securing the rings of the sling, you need to sew fabric in 4 or more folds.

OPERATING PROCEDURE

  1. Cut to the required length and width. In my case (a double-sided sling made of thin fabric), I took a flap 1.50 m wide and plan to sew it in half and get a sling approximately 65 cm wide (including allowances), the length of my fabric is 2.20 m.
  2. Finish the edges of the canvas.

  3. We have a rectangle with processed edges. Now we take one side of the fabric, mark the middle and begin to drape the fabric.

  4. We make a wide counter fold and smaller ones from it in descending order. You can drape at your own request in several ways.
  5. We secure the folds with pins. For convenience, iron it well.

  6. We secure the folds by retreating 7-8 cm from the edge.

  7. We put two rings on.

  8. We secure the tail with a reinforced seam on the back side. This seam will bear all the load; I chose a reinforced zigzag stitch. Remember to change the needle depending on the thickness of the fabric.

  9. Our ring sling is ready.

HAPPY MOTHERHOOD TO YOU!
