Children are the flowers of life, so you need to start gardening: rating of the best educational books for children under 1 year old for 2020

Baby and book. Just recently, this combination would have caused ridicule or bewilderment. But today more and more mothers believe that a child needs to collect a library from the first months of his life. This way he will grow up surrounded by books, develop diversified, and it will be easier for him to instill a love of reading at an older age. And the range of such products today is not at all what it was a couple of decades ago, when today’s parents were children. And that's exactly the point. Moms are at a loss - what books are really needed for babies? How to choose them? After all, a baby has a completely different perception of the world than an adult!

Why do children need books?

Of course, for development. What do books develop in children? First of all, speech. When a child hears rhythmically formed, well-intonated speech, or expressive reading of fairy tales, or looks at pictures in a book, listening to his mother’s comments, he learns a speech pattern, its rhythm, beauty, gains experience in interactive speech, and accumulates a passive vocabulary.

What else do such books provide?

  • Expand the baby's horizons.
  • Introduce them to a variety of life situations.
  • Helps develop good taste.

And books for kids are also about emotional development. The child learns to feel sorry for the poor bunny getting wet in the rain, the bear with a torn paw, rejoices at the ingenuity of Masha, whom the bear took to her grandparents in a box of pies, imagines himself as brave as the cockerel who drove the fox out of the bunny’s house...

The baby gets the first ideas about possible models of behavior, about good and evil, about good and bad...

But this is all relevant for children around one year old and older. What is useful in books for the youngest children?

Modern children's books for babies up to one year old help:

  • develop fine motor skills;
  • develop vision, hearing (including phonemic);
  • study the world around us;
  • motivate the child to engage in cognitive activity.

From a young age

But newborns still don’t understand anything at all, why do they need books? There are very specific books for babies in the first months of life. It’s hard to even call them books:

  • Usually they are textile so that the child does not eat too much paper, because everything that gets into the hands of the baby is pulled into the mouth.
  • They almost always have no text. It's simply not needed. The purpose of such “literature” is to develop other areas. Tactile perception – including.
  • In shape it is more like an accordion than a book: the baby does not yet know how to leaf through it.
  • Even if the “pages” of such a book are multi-colored, the pictures on them are black and white (or black and white on one side and color on the other). This is for the development of vision. After all, in early infancy a person does not distinguish colors, only contrasts. The pictures in such books are not plot-based, depicting individual objects.
  • They can be washed without worry.

Such “literature” can be hung in the baby’s crib from the first months. It is light in weight and small in size and fits comfortably in tiny hands. But the baby will be able to “read” it a little later, when he learns to recognize colors.

When choosing such a book for a baby, pay attention that there are no ribbons, details on buttons, Velcro, buttons, or pockets - all this will be useful at an older age, but now the child can simply tear it all off and then put it in his mouth.

Also check all seams and stitching: the ends of the threads should be securely fixed and not frayed.

Consultation “The role of books in child development”

Olga Bibanina

Consultation “The role of books in child development”

It is no secret that modern children read little, preferring books to watching television programs, videos, and computer films. We live in a completely different world and sometimes we cannot stop in our high-speed 21st century to look into ourselves, into our inner world, which should be richer than TV and computer. And our soul can only be rich from communication with a good person and a good book . Nowadays, parents complain that their children have stopped reading, and sometimes they don’t think about what they did to make the book interesting and necessary for the child.

What to read, how to teach a child to read , how to maintain interest in reading. This is a concern not only for parents, teachers, librarians - it is a concern for the future of Russia, today this is understood at the state level.

This book exists to help a child grow up as a “Human”

with a capital letter.
Children will not start reading on their own, just out of the blue. No one else was born with a love of reading. We need adults who would show the child the way to great book wealth, firstly, parents, secondly, a teacher, thirdly, a librarian.
There are as many ways to encourage children to read as there are children. And the most important way is for you, parents, not to part with a book , newspaper, magazine.

The role of books in the development and upbringing of children.

Children have a great need for their parents to read aloud to them. For the successful development of a child, family reading is very important, and not only until the child himself cannot read , but also at a later age. Children look forward to when mom or dad will have time for them.

For a child to grow up mentally healthy, he needs full communication with his parents, personal communication, when attention is given to him completely. And reading together provides such an opportunity.

Aspects of child development affected by shared reading.

· Satisfying the need for security. When a child sits on mom or dad's lap (or next to a parent, snuggling up to him)

while reading
a book , he creates a feeling of closeness, security and safety.
A single space and a sense of belonging are created. · Feeling of self-worth and importance

and your interests.
When parents read what is interesting to the child and are ready to discuss with him topics that are significant to him, they strive to understand his views as best as possible, the child develops an idea of himself as a significant person, whose needs and interests are important (since they are given attention to such important people are parents)
.

· Formation of values. The book influences the child’s , shaping his values. The heroes of the books perform various actions, experience different life situations, consonant with the world of the child or unknown to him . Using examples of situations in which the heroes of books , the child learns to understand what good and evil, friendship and betrayal, sympathy, duty, honor are. And the task of parents is to help see the reflection of these values in the life of the child .

· Responding to significant experiences. A book is also a means of response (discharge)

experiences that are painful or frightening
for the child , which it is not always possible to cope with in a familiar situation. The child , together with the hero, experiences his failures and victories, overcomes fears and difficulties on the way to his goal.
Thus, freeing yourself from your own fears and negative experiences. · Teaching new or necessary behaviors. Through the book, the child perceives various models of behavior (how to be friends, how to achieve goals, how to resolve conflicts, which can be effective in various life situations. The greatest effect can be achieved if reading is also supplemented by a joint discussion of who learned what for themselves, what they liked , what was close, frightened, amused... Parents can help the child see analogies of what he read with his own life.

As a rule, in families where parents often read a lot to their children, there is a harmonious, friendly atmosphere. Parents reading can be considered an indicator of a prosperous family; in such families there is a low level of violence and family disharmony.

What exactly are the benefits of reading?

First of all, reading develops speech abilities and directly affects the quality and quantity of vocabulary. Thanks to reading, a person learns to concentrate and trains his memory. The book promotes the development of imaginative thinking and literacy. After all, while reading, a person remembers the correct spelling of words and their use in a certain context.

Thanks to the book, a person acquires the skills of deep thinking and analysis. The ability to read between the lines and grasp double meanings appears. Reading literature also develops wit . Reading aloud develops the baby's speaking abilities.

Reading develops cognitive interests and broadens one's horizons. Books help a child to know himself .

The book unites generations. Books give strength and inspiration. They captivate and entertain . They make children and adults laugh and cry. They reduce loneliness, bring comfort and indicate a way out of difficult situations.

activity for a child’s intellectual, emotional and mental .

What other books are there for kids?

The range of books for children under one year old is truly impressive; shelves littered with children's literature are the main difficulty in choosing the right book. What are they?

  • With figured cutting – end-to-end or page-by-page. This shape will surely attract the child's attention.
  • With windows behind which something interesting is hidden, you just need to open the window slightly.
  • With puzzles . From one to six elements can appear on the page, under which something else is hidden.
  • With tactile inserts - some of the details of the pictures in them are made of different textured fabrics that are pleasant to touch. Also suitable for the youngest children, starting from about 3 months.
  • With moving parts . These could be “latches” - sliding parts of pages, or moving eyes of characters.
  • With holes for fingers - books for finger games. You can play with them from 9 to 10 months.
  • Books-toys. The shape of your favorite doll, bear or truck opens up new possibilities for working with a book: you can not only read or listen to it, but rock it like a doll, ride it like a car...
  • Musical. They will also develop the child’s hearing: talk to him, sing, play melodies, reproduce the sounds of animals or birds, resemble a child’s piano.
  • With rattles. Two- to three-month-old toddlers will like it.
  • For swimming. The good thing is that they can be chewed and wetted with water without fear. Many are equipped with funny squeaks, or even change color when wet.

Tactile books, as well as books with puzzles and windows, help develop fine motor skills and sensory perception of the baby. Just like those designed for finger games. They will not lose their relevance even at 3 years.

Music books develop phonemic awareness. Depending on the content, they can teach a child at an older age: to introduce letters, numbers, the world around him, traffic rules, animal voices, sounds of nature, transport, sounds of musical instruments. They are able to attract even a restless child.

Let's start reading

It is not advisable to read books to a child until at least six months of age: he is not yet able to understand the meaning of what he read. Unless mom's voice will be listened to. But from 6 to 7 months, babies begin to show interest in what they listen to. What can a baby read at this age? Texts should be short and easy for children to understand:

  • children's songs;
  • nursery rhymes;
  • jokes;
  • counters;
  • quatrains;
  • lullabies.

These can be both examples of folk art and original works (S. Marshak, A. Barto, B. Zakhoder).

They are produced in a variety of series:

  • “Reading to children”;
  • “My very first book”;
  • "Stompers";
  • "Funny Cardboards";
  • "School of the Seven Dwarfs";
  • “About everything in the world”, etc.

Children under one year old are not yet able to perceive long stories, complex plots, reading with continuation, when a work is read for several days, continuing from where they left off. So the best children's books are those that contain a minimum of text. You need to have time to read the book not just in one evening, but literally in a few minutes - the toddler’s attention will not be enough for longer. Even simple fairy tales will be useful to him closer to the year or after.

Teach your child to treat books with respect from early childhood: do not tear them, do not throw them away, put them away after reading on a special shelf or a separate cabinet.

Books for kids

Criterias of choice

So how to choose the right educational literature for children under one year old? After all, it must “live up” until the older age of its young readers. What to look for when choosing?

  • Cover. Thick cardboard, fabric, oilcloth are suitable materials for a baby. They must withstand repeated squeezing and endless sucking or gnawing. So thin paper is not suitable.
  • Book material. The pages should also be “vandal-proof”—dense and durable. You should pay attention to the fact that the pages and cover of the book have a matte surface (the gloss glares, irritating the baby’s eyes), and that the pages are connected to the cover without metal staples or paper clips - the child may accidentally bend them and get hurt (or swallow them, which is even worse) . Special attention is paid to the stability of the paint (no painted palms!) and the absence of extraneous “chemical” aromas.
  • Age appropriate. This applies to both the text part and the pictures. As for the text, as already mentioned, it should be kept to a minimum. In addition, words and sentences should be simple and understandable to the child. After all, you can often find on sale even folk tales in such a presentation that it makes no sense to read them before 3–4 years of age. Folk tales (“The Ryaba Hen”, “Kolobok”, “Turnip”, “Teremok”, “The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats”, “The Fox and the Wolf”), of course, imply variability, but the variations must correspond to the child’s level of understanding. So before purchasing a book, it is better for a mother to skim through its text and evaluate how accessible it will be for the baby. Even if books are purchased “for growth”, which the child will be able to perceive after about a year, he will need to be able to delve into and understand the content. At an earlier age, the baby will be able to look at pictures and recognize familiar characters in them. The older the child is, the longer the stories can be, the more complex the plot, the more varied the vocabulary and syntax.
  • Size and volume. For children under one year old, it is more interesting and convenient to read baby books that can be held in their hands, twirled, and examined. The volume of such a book should not be too large: a baby will not be interested in huge collections of fairy tales, since he will not be able to hold them and look through them. In addition, at such a tender age, the baby cannot understand why every time the mother extracts more and more new stories from the same book. So, optimally, one work per book. Accordingly, the larger the book format, the fewer pages it should have. It is better that the book is smaller than A4 size. The weight of the book is also taken into account: the child should easily lift it, and the absence of sharp corners on the pages - they must be rounded so as not to prick the baby.
  • Illustrations. This is one of the main criteria by which books for little ones are chosen. Pictures must be high-quality printed, have clear contours and rich, pure colors. Dark, gloomy, dirty and dull tones will not arouse enthusiasm in the future owner. Pictures should be as simple and clear as possible, without unnecessary distracting details, understandable and believable. The drawings should be placed on a plain or white background so that the baby’s eyes are not distracted from the main objects. Characters' facial expressions should not be frightening or repulsive.
  • Compliance of pictures with content. Little children get lost if the pictures don't show what mom is reading about. Therefore, each plot twist must necessarily correspond to an illustration. And it is better if it is on the same page with “its” text, and not on neighboring ones - this way it is easier for the baby to navigate and perceive the text (it immediately corresponds to the picture, the image is folded and imprinted in the small head). That is, in essence, the pictures should be “step-by-step”.
  • Font. The more actively a child “reads” books, the sooner he begins to become interested in letters. Accordingly, the font should be clear, large and understandable, the printing should be bright and contrasting. The letters must be recognizable, so there should not be an overly ornate “ligature” in a children’s book. Even when designing the first letters on the page.

Choosing the first children's library is a responsible matter. It is important that it contains copies of different shapes, sizes, designs, age-appropriate quality and content (for example, copies with a rattle will lose relevance after a year, and a 3-month-old baby has definitely not yet grown up to a book with a built-in piano). Then they will contribute to the development of the child and will not just become a way to captivate him for a while.

Rattles and music books

Ideally, a child's first book should have a soundtrack. Therefore, many manufacturers add rattles and musical speakers to them.
