- Age appropriate. This applies to both the text part and the pictures. As for the text, as already mentioned, it should be kept to a minimum. In addition, words and sentences should be simple and understandable to the child. After all, you can often find on sale even folk tales in such a presentation that it makes no sense to read them before 3–4 years of age. Folk tales (“The Ryaba Hen”, “Kolobok”, “Turnip”, “Teremok”, “The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats”, “The Fox and the Wolf”), of course, imply variability, but the variations must correspond to the child’s level of understanding. So before purchasing a book, it is better for a mother to skim through its text and evaluate how accessible it will be for the baby. Even if books are purchased “for growth”, which the child will be able to perceive after about a year, he will need to be able to delve into and understand the content. At an earlier age, the baby will be able to look at pictures and recognize familiar characters in them. The older the child is, the longer the stories can be, the more complex the plot, the more varied the vocabulary and syntax.
- Size and volume. For children under one year old, it is more interesting and convenient to read baby books that can be held in their hands, twirled, and examined. The volume of such a book should not be too large: a baby will not be interested in huge collections of fairy tales, since he will not be able to hold them and look through them. In addition, at such a tender age, the baby cannot understand why every time the mother extracts more and more new stories from the same book. So, optimally, one work per book. Accordingly, the larger the book format, the fewer pages it should have. It is better that the book is smaller than A4 size. The weight of the book is also taken into account: the child should easily lift it, and the absence of sharp corners on the pages - they must be rounded so as not to prick the baby.
- Illustrations. This is one of the main criteria by which books for little ones are chosen. Pictures must be high-quality printed, have clear contours and rich, pure colors. Dark, gloomy, dirty and dull tones will not arouse enthusiasm in the future owner. Pictures should be as simple and clear as possible, without unnecessary distracting details, understandable and believable. The drawings should be placed on a plain or white background so that the baby’s eyes are not distracted from the main objects. Characters' facial expressions should not be frightening or repulsive.
- Compliance of pictures with content. Little children get lost if the pictures don't show what mom is reading about. Therefore, each plot twist must necessarily correspond to an illustration. Accordingly, the font should be clear, large and understandable, the printing should be bright and contrasting. Choosing the first children's library is a responsible matter.
