Erespal syrup for a 4 year old child dosage

Release form

"Erespal" in syrup is a product of the French company Les Laboratoires Servier, but can be produced both in France and in Russia. It is sold in plastic bottles, which sometimes come with a 15 ml plastic measuring cup. The volume of syrup in one bottle is 150 ml or 250 ml.

The drug is a clear liquid with a yellowish-brown tint. During storage, a sediment often forms in the syrup, but after shaking it often dissolves and the medicine becomes clear again. This medicine tastes sweet and smells pleasant of honey and vanilla.

Compound

The main ingredient of Erespal is called fenspiride and is presented in syrup in the form of hydrochloride. Its amount in 100 ml of the drug is 200 mg, that is, from each milliliter of medication the patient receives fenspiride in a dose of 2 mg. One of the excipients of the syrup is an extract from licorice roots, the dosage of which is also 200 mg/100 ml.

To prevent the medicine from spoiling and remaining liquid, it included potassium sorbate, purified water and glycerol, as well as methyl and propyl parahydroxybenzoate. For sweetness, sucrose and saccharin are added to Erespal, and for scent, the medicine contains vanilla tincture and honey flavoring. Such components include honey, natural flavors and ethanol in small quantities - less than 0.29 mg per 100 ml of syrup.

Operating principle

Erespal has an anti-inflammatory effect, as well as the ability to prevent the development of bronchospasm. The syrup also has an anti-exudative effect and is able to relax smooth muscles. Its main component acts as an antagonist of substances that are released during an allergic and inflammatory reaction. First of all, we are talking about histamine, because Erespal blocks H1 receptors, but, in addition, the medication affects the production of serotonin and bradykinin. If the syrup is used in high doses, it can reduce the synthesis of other inflammatory mediators, as well as the formation of free radicals.

After entering the gastrointestinal tract, the drug is absorbed quite well, and the maximum concentration of fenspiride in the blood is determined on average after 2-2.5 hours. Half of the absorbed drug is excreted within 12 hours. This occurs mainly in urine - only 10% of the active substance ends up in the feces.

Indications

“Erespal” is in demand for various diseases of the respiratory system and is used for hoarseness, runny nose, barking cough, sore throat, wet cough and other respiratory symptoms. This syrup is prescribed:

  • with rhinopharyngitis;
  • with bronchitis, including obstructive;
  • with laryngitis;
  • for bronchial asthma;
  • with laryngotracheitis;
  • with influenza or ARVI;
  • with laryngeal stenosis;
  • with tracheitis;
  • with adenoids;
  • with otitis;
  • for sinusitis;
  • with sore throat;
  • with whooping cough;
  • with measles.

For all these diseases that affect the respiratory tract, Erespal has a pathogenetic effect, that is, it affects the processes that take place in the body of a sick person due to the influence of harmful bacteria, allergens, viral particles and other causes. Thanks to the intake of syrup, a complex multidirectional effect on the respiratory tract is achieved:

  • inflammation activity decreases;
  • swelling of the mucous membrane is reduced or its occurrence is prevented if the disease has just begun;
  • bronchospasm is eliminated or prevented;
  • the viscosity of the mucous bronchial secretion decreases.

Such effects of the drug lead to relief of the sick child’s condition, restoration of breathing and a reduction in the duration of the disease.

What is Erespal

Erespal is a medicine for cough of any etiology. That is, the medicine can be prescribed to children aged three years both for bronchitis, flu, and for seasonal allergies, which are accompanied by cough.

During treatment, the following processes occur:

  • receptors that are responsible for inflammation are blocked;
  • muscle spasm of the bronchial tree is relieved;
  • histamine receptors, which are responsible for allergic reactions in the body, are blocked;
  • mucopolysaccharides are eliminated, which make the secretion difficult to separate and thick.

Erespal acts not only as an antitussive. It has anti-inflammatory properties and relieves spasms. This complex effect allows you to quickly remove mucus from the bronchi and eliminate cough.

Side effects

During treatment with Erespal, the following may occur:

  • nausea, diarrhea or other gastrointestinal upset;
  • tachycardia and low blood pressure;
  • drowsiness, fatigue and dizziness;
  • skin redness, rash, swelling, itching and other types of allergic reactions.

If your child experiences one or more of these symptoms, it is recommended that you see a doctor. It is especially important to immediately show the patient to a doctor if you are allergic to the syrup.

Use of the drug in pediatrics

Is Erespal allowed for one year old children? According to the official instructions, Erespal is indicated for children under 18 years of age only in the form of syrup. The medicine can be prescribed to children from 2 years of age. The dosage is calculated based on the child's weight. A baby weighing up to 10 kg is prescribed 2-4 teaspoons (10-20 ml) per day. Take the medicine before meals. This accelerates the absorption of Fenspiride. If the baby weighs more than 10 kg, then Erespal is given 2-4 tablespoons per day.

Since the instructions contain data on weight up to 10 kg, it is permissible to prescribe Erespal syrup to a child aged 1 year . Treatment of children less than 2 years old is carried out under the strict supervision of the attending physician. You should not use the medicine on your own in one-year-old children, as there is a high risk of an allergic reaction or other complications (rapid heartbeat, dyspepsia, itching).

The dosage of Erespal for one year corresponds to the following: if the baby weighs less than 10 kg, it is recommended to use 2-4 teaspoons per day. The medicine can be given before meals or diluted with a mixture, milk, or juice. Children under one year of age are better able to take medicine from a bottle. The duration of treatment is determined individually, often depending on the severity of the clinical symptoms of the disease. If your baby develops allergies, diarrhea, gastralgia or other undesirable effects during therapy, you should immediately stop taking the medicine and consult a doctor to adjust the therapy.

Instructions for use

"Erespal" is first shaken and then poured into a measuring cup, a regular teaspoon (it holds 5 ml of the drug, that is, 10 mg of fenspiride) or a tablespoon (this measure will contain 15 ml of the drug, which corresponds to 30 mg of the active ingredient).

It is recommended to take the medication not after meals, but before meals. If a child is bothered by a night cough, then the last dose of Erespal is best taken at night.

The dosage for young patients should be calculated for each child separately based on their body weight. To do this, the baby’s weight in kilograms is multiplied by 4 mg, for example, if the child weighs 15 kg, the result is 15x4 = 60 mg. This is the daily dose of fenspiride for a given patient, which corresponds to 30 ml of syrup. It is divided into 2-4 doses, that is, the child in our example can be given the medicine twice with 15 ml (one tablespoon or a full measuring cup), three times with 10 ml or four times with 7.5 ml per dose.

The average single dosage for patients weighing less than 10 kg is one teaspoon (5 ml), and for children who weigh more, one tablespoon (15 ml) is needed per dose. Depending on the disease, Erespal is taken in such doses from two to four times a day. For the youngest patients, syrup is allowed to be added to food. Adolescents are given the medication 45-90 ml per day, dosing it in tablespoons.

The duration of taking Erespal differs for each child, because the list of diseases for which syrup is prescribed is quite extensive. The course of treatment for ARVI will be short, but for inflammation of the bronchi or other serious lesions of the respiratory tract, the medication will need to be given much longer. Repeated use some time after completion of the previous course should also be agreed with your doctor.

Why was Erespal cough syrup banned in Russia and removed from sale?

Despite the fact that the drug is recognized as safe for health, its sales in Russia were unexpectedly suspended. According to representatives of Roskomnadzor, experts will have to make a decision on the future fate of the drug. There is a possibility that Erespal may pose a serious risk to human health.

It is noted that the ban on its sale came from France itself. The manufacturer emphasizes that the fenspiride contained in this medicine may affect the functioning of the heart. This is evidenced by the results of additional studies conducted during clinical trials of other similar drugs. It also became known that the European Union has not yet abandoned the sale of the product. And its circulation on the territory of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia is prohibited. It is reported that access to medications containing fenspiride will be closed as a precaution from February 18th.

It is worth adding that the widely used remedy was registered by French doctors 4 decades ago. Today, this product can be purchased through pharmacy chains in 32 countries.

Are inhalations prescribed?

Many medications that are usually taken orally can also be prescribed by inhalation, which is done using a special device (called a nebulizer). Such procedures have a local effect on the respiratory tract, help eliminate smooth muscle spasms and moisturize the mucous membranes. A nebulizer helps make a cloud of tiny droplets from a liquid medication, which, when inhaled, depending on their size, enter the upper or lower respiratory tract.

Typically, inhalations are prescribed with solutions or drops, less often with suspensions. But syrups are not suitable for inhalation treatment, so manipulations with liquid Erespal are prohibited. The sweet drug cannot be sprayed into small particles that will affect the bronchial tree, and the risk of nebulizer failure when trying to inhale the syrup increases significantly. So you can’t pour Erespal into the device’s chamber.

Contraindications

Taking Erespal syrup for children is contraindicated in the presence of individual intolerance to any of the components of the drug, as well as in children under 2 years of age. The drug is used with caution against the background of concomitant disturbances in the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates (glucose-galactose malabsorption, deficiency of the digestive enzyme lactase), as well as in patients with diabetes mellitus. Before starting to use the drug, it is important to ensure that there are no contraindications.

Overdose

If you give your child syrup in too large a dose, it can cause drowsiness (or, on the contrary, nervous agitation), vomiting or severe nausea, as well as an increase in heart rate. In such a situation, you should seek medical help so that the little patient’s stomach is pumped, an ECG is performed and his vital signs are monitored.

Storage conditions

It is permissible to keep the syrup at home at room temperature, that is, storing it in a refrigerator is not required. However, the drug must be placed in a place where the medication will not be accessible to small children, because due to the sweet taste, a child may accidentally drink it and get an overdose.

The shelf life of liquid Erespal is 3 years. If the date indicated on the bottle (month and year) has passed, you should not give the medicine to your child.

Reviews

About 70-75% of reviews about Erespal are positive. In them, parents confirm the good effect of the syrup and say that it helped with a long debilitating cough or runny nose, and also eliminated discomfort in the throat. Most children like the taste of the medicine, and dosing the liquid medicine is easy. The advantages of the medicine also include convenient packaging, which lasts for a long time, and an affordable price. However, there are also reviews with complaints about the lack of therapeutic effect. In addition, many mothers do not like the large number of chemical additives in the syrup, in particular the presence of parabens. In some reviews, the taste of “Erespal” in syrup is called overly sweet, and the price is overpriced.

Doctors' opinions about Erespal are also mostly good. Many ENT doctors and pediatricians prescribe this remedy for various lesions of the respiratory tract - from ARVI to severe obstruction. They confirm the effectiveness of such a syrup, but emphasize that any medications for cough, sore throat, runny nose and other symptoms should be given after examination by a specialist.

Peculiarities

Before you start using Erespal syrup, it is important to carefully read the instructions for it, and also pay attention to several special instructions:

  • The drug contains parabens, which can cause delayed allergic reactions.
  • Erespal syrup contains sucrose, which should be taken into account when using it in patients with concomitant diabetes mellitus.
  • The drug is not recommended for pregnant women, as its safety remains unclear.
  • After taking the drug, it is not recommended to engage in activities that require increased concentration of attention and speed of psychomotor reactions.
